After defeating a team they were expected to beat, legions of North Carolina Journalism majors rushed onto the court in advance of blowing their parents money on cheap beer and pizza. This raises an important question: was this win worthy of Storming the Court?
Today we saw an incredibly worthy Storming of the Court. The 10-19 Iowa Hawkeyes, a team with only 3 conference wins, led by a cadre of unatheletic white stiffs with no range (typically not a recipe for upset success) and coached by a first year man Fran McCaffery, improbably defeated #6 Purdue, a team in contention for a number 1 seed. It was the biggest upset in Iowa since Obama defeated Hillary Clinton, and the fans reacted accordingly.
The Quorum ranks this as a strong storming of the court.
On to Carolina versus Duke.
First, the pros. Carolina did win the ACC with this, and while this isn't necessarily as grand an accomplishment as it normally is, they did defeat a Duke team with two seniors from their 2010 championship squad.
The rivalry is assumed. And the only thing you do if you go to Duke is party on Franklin Street anyway, unless you go to Shooters (something something Kristin Odom joke something chlamydia). The fanbases know one another.
...
Alright that's about it as far as pros.
People best not forget that this Carolina team was up 14 at the half against Duke in Durham, and the Heels needed an epic collapse to lose. They're better down low, and with Kyle Singler having forgotten how to shoot from the perimeter they're probably the better team. Ken Pomeroy had Duke as a 1 point favorite, but that's statistically insignificant....in a rivalry game....for the ACC....on CBS' first regular season prime time game.
In our final conclusion, the Quorum ranks this as a poor Storming of the Court.
I mean yeah we get it you're excited and this is what your parents have been telling you about since you were a kid but Jesus Christ guys it's not like you haven't been the better team for the last month. Sure you struggled to beat Florida State recently, and in the beginning of the season anyone could have beat you (Long Beach State and College of Charleston lol), but for the last month you've arguably been one of the best teams in college basketball.
Duke, on the other hand, lost at Florida State and at Virginia Tech. It's clear to see who was on the rise and who was falling heading into this affair.
Guys you live in the coolest city in North Carolina, and while that's damning with faint praise, there's a shit ton better things than running on to the court to celebrate a victory over a team most people expected you to beat. You're Carolina for fuck's sake. Have some god damn pride. You've got so much shittery hanging from the banners (NIT 3rd place? Really guys?) it makes for its own Cold Pizza segment. Carolina is expected to win.
In the immortal words of noted coke fiend Charlie Sheen, "Earn Yourself." You guys are bi-winning. Five national Championships, god knows how many final fours, a billion NBA players...
Carolina fans don't get to storm the court.
